131 MAIN is a Blakeney dinner option for steaks, seafood and American dishes cooked over a hickory wood fire. The covered porch and fire pit give you another way to enjoy the evening. Abugida Ethiopian Cafe & Restaurant

Plaza Shamrock · ethiopian

Abugida is a family-run Ethiopian room on Central Avenue that describes itself simply as a 'Family owned authentic Ethiopian restaurant'. The food is eaten the traditional way, scooped with injera rather than cutlery, and the kitchen keeps a wide range of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free dishes on the board because Ethiopian fasting cooking is built that way. The cafe also serves a full coffee ceremony, poured at the table with frankincense burning alongside it.

Alexander Michael's

Uptown · american, pub food

Alexander Michael's has been a Fourth Ward neighborhood tavern since 1983, inside the brick Crowell-Berryhill Store that opened in 1897. The room kept pieces of Charlotte with it: the bar and back bar were made from solid oak doors taken from the old Independence Building, and the beer cooler came from a Charlotte grocery store around 1920. Come for a burger, a beer and a building that survived when much of the neighborhood did not.

This is the original Amelie's, and the company says so plainly on the location page: the NoDa shop is the Original, the Icon, the Heart of Amelie's history. The room is decorated with Eiffel Tower legs peeking from the walls and local artwork, and the company's own description is a vibrant arts-district backdrop with just the right amount of quirky chaos. There is a full pastry case, a cafe menu, a barista station and outdoor seating, and it stays open to midnight on Friday and Saturday. Amelie's has since added Park Road, Carmel Commons, Uptown, Plaza Midwood and Rock Hill, South Carolina.

It is run by Jeff Tonidandel, a Certified Cicerone, with Jamie Brown, the same pair behind Haberdish, Ever Andalo and Supperland.

The Bib Gourmand is MICHELIN's value designation, given for good cooking at a moderate price, and the Observer noted diners can eat here for twenty-five dollars or less. Axios Charlotte reported that after the award the line ran out the door and around the building, with regulars turning up carrying balloons and flowers.

Le's Sandwiches & Cafe

vietnamese

Le's has been making banh mi on East Sugar Creek Road since 1996 and is run now by Tuan Nguyen, the son of the couple who opened it. bbq, southern

A family smokehouse and saloon on Old Pineville Road, opened in 2006 by brothers Ryan and Jim Register with their father Namon. Its own account is that the family noticed how few scratch-made kitchens Charlotte had and started collecting the family's best recipes with the idea of opening their own room. Our State singles out the award-winning smoked ribs and the homemade coconut pie, and says the wings are smoked over pecan wood.

Soul Gastrolounge

NoDa · small plates, sushi

Soul opened in Plaza Midwood in 2009 as one of Charlotte's first small-plate restaurants, in a 68-seat upstairs room with no reservations and a waitlist that regularly ran two hours. Its own origin story says it was the first in the city to make local house deejays an integral part of the dining experience, and the house music has stayed. It lost the Plaza Midwood lease in 2022 and owner, chef and DJ Andy Kastanas spent three years building the replacement, reopening in August 2025 at 4110 Raleigh Street near the Sugar Creek station with roughly triple the seats, a semi-private dining room and a patio. Sugar Creek Brewing sits on Southside Drive off South Boulevard, and it is the Charlotte brewery that went all in on one style. Its own line is that it is 'dedicated to crafting Belgian-inspired ales for the Carolinas and beyond', with a philosophy that 'combines the watchful eye of a Trappist Monk with the technical precision of a nuclear engineer'. Co-founders Joe Vogelbacher and Eric Flanigan are named on the site.

Sunflour Baking Company

Elizabeth · bakery, pastry, sandwiches

A scratch bakery and cafe that calls itself a local, family owned bakery and keeps a standing plant-based and gluten-free line rather than occasional specials. The Elizabeth shop on East 7th Street is the room proposed here; the company also runs Dilworth, NoDa, Ballantyne and Harrisburg shops. Its own site is careful to say the bakeries are not gluten-free facilities.

Sweet Lew's BBQ

Belmont · bbq, southern

Lewis Donald, formerly of Reid's Fine Foods, and Laura Furman Grice converted an old service station on Belmont Avenue into a smoke shack and opened it in December 2018. The core of the menu is Lexington-style chopped barbecue made with North Carolina pork shoulder, alongside dry-rubbed ribs, smoked chicken, brisket, fried chicken and fried fish. Four sauces are made in house: eastern North Carolina vinegar, Lexington tomato, South Carolina mustard and Alabama white. The Thirsty Beaver is the small brick dive bar on Central Avenue that a 323-unit apartment complex was built around. Brothers Brian and Mark Wilson opened it in 2008 and lease the building from owner George Salem, who turned down two offers from the developer that bought the surrounding land for 8.5 million dollars in 2015. The developer built the apartments in a horseshoe around the bar instead, and the Associated Press called it Charlotte's own version of the house from Up. There is live music on Sundays and a pool table.
